Description
JBL ClearMec Plus - 600ml is a chemical filter medium that takes nitrite, nitrate and phosphate out of freshwater. It comes pre-packed in two filter bags you drop straight into the filter, and JBL sizes the 600ml pack for 150 to 300 litres.
Key Features
- Binds nitrite, nitrate and phosphate: the three that build up in a tank and that no amount of mechanical filtration removes.
- Sized for 150 to 300 litres: JBL's figure for this 600ml pack, which is the number to work from.
- Two bags, ready to use: no measuring and no loose granules in the filter.
- Starves algae of nutrients: nitrate and phosphate are the two things an algae problem feeds on.
- For freshwater: JBL lists it for freshwater aquariums.
- Test, do not guess: a reading before and after a media change is the only way to know whether it did what you hoped.
Fitting And Replacing It
- Put it after the mechanical stages in the flow, so it is not doing the coarse filter's job.
- Rinse the bags in tank water before they go in.
- Replace them on a schedule. A spent resin looks exactly like a fresh one.
- Change this medium at a different time from the biological media, so the filter never loses two stages at once.
Good To Know
- Resin media do not last indefinitely. They fill up with what they have bound and then simply stop working, with no outward sign, so replace them on a schedule rather than when something goes wrong.
- In a planted tank, do not strip nitrate and phosphate to nothing. Plants need both, and a tank with neither tends to hand the advantage to algae anyway.
- Test the water before and after you change the media. It is the only way to know whether a change did what you hoped.
- Chemical media is not a substitute for water changes, sensible stocking or lighter feeding. It buys you headroom, not a different tank.
- Rinse media in tank water, never under the tap. Chlorine kills the bacteria living on it, and those bacteria are most of what a mature filter is worth.
