FARMA White Calcium Sand Bird Supplement - 20kg

The FARMA White Calcium Sand Bird Supplement is a fine white calcium grit for birds — FARMA's mineral supplement, which the brand says can either be offered in a pot or spread as cage-floor cover.

Key Features

• FARMA declares a calcium content of 98%, from calcium carbonate, with magnesium carbonate and iron oxide
• Gives seed-eating birds both the grit they need to grind food and the calcium they need for eggshell and bone
• Fine, even grain, so it works as a cage or aviary floor covering as well as a feed supplement
• 20 kg sack
• Made in Greece by Farma Friends, a pet-food maker near Thessaloniki that has been blending seed since 1997

How To Use

• Offer it in a shallow pot separate from the seed, so birds take what they need rather than having it mixed through the ration
• Replace the pot as soon as it is fouled. Birds will not use a dirty grit pot
• Demand rises sharply in laying hens and in growing birds

Good To Know

• The 98% figure is FARMA's declaration for the mineral. Calcium carbonate is the compound, and calcium itself is about 40% of calcium carbonate by weight — either way this is close to a pure calcium mineral
• Calcium only works alongside vitamin D3. A bird kept indoors behind glass gets very little usable UV, and calcium on its own will not fix that — worth raising with an avian vet
• Used as floor cover, keep it dry and change it regularly. Damp mineral sand cakes and harbours bacteria
• Grit is for seed-eating birds. Parrots that shell their own seed largely do not need it, and birds of prey have no use for it at all
• Offer it free-choice rather than mixing it through the feed. Birds regulate their own mineral intake reasonably well when it is given separately
