• Never let this be the only perch. One diameter and one surface all day causes pressure sores and arthritis; birds need several perches of different thicknesses and materials, including natural wood.
• Do not fit any perch directly above a food or water bowl.
• A bird that grips the same spot all day gets flat, sore feet. Redness, shiny skin or a limp is bumblefoot starting - see an avian vet before it gets worse.
• Natural wood absorbs droppings. Scrub it and let it dry right through before it goes back, and replace it once it stays dirty.
• Birds chew perches. Check it now and again, and replace it once it has gone thin or splintered.
• A bird that stops playing, sits fluffed on the cage floor or goes quiet is showing the first signs of illness - birds hide sickness until they can no longer manage it. That is an urgent avian vet visit, not a wait-and-see.
